From our own experience, the 5:1 ratio is best for us. The surf coach can help both in and out of the water, giving tips and suggestions for improvement without losing the overview.
Good surf school: there are surf courses for different levels and requirements
It is particularly important that your chosen surf school offers surf courses at different levels. After all, it’s no good for a 5th grader to be downgraded to 2nd grade and vice versa. It is therefore important to at least differentiate between beginners and intermediates and, ideally, to offer a further level that is either in between or above them. This avoids frustration and makes you feel more comfortable. Of course, it is also important that you assess yourself realistically and that the surf coaches still have the opportunity to place you at a different level if necessary. Ideally, you should be asked about your surfing level when you book and talk to the coaches again after your arrival to find out what experience you already bring to the surf course. Remember that you no surf guiding choose a surf guide. You will only be driven to the spot and introduced to the spot. An extensive warm-up to warm up the muscles and lubricate the joints is also part of a lesson. And, of course, the take-off exercises should be practiced on land first so that you can then go into the water feeling confident. A top surf school offers a sufficient selection of different and well-maintained surfboards and equipment
A good surf school should also offer you good surfing equipment. Of course, it’s not about great colors, but especially about the condition of the surfboards. Softboards in particular are used every day and have to suffer a few times. Distributing boards that are soaked with tons of water and have already been repaired 500 times makes an unprofessional impression. In the same breath, you should find out whether you are liable for damage to the board or whether this is covered by the surf school. A sufficient selection of hardboards and different shapes is also welcome. The wetsuits should also not have any holes or be worn out.
A perfect surf school has no fixed surf course times and the spots are flexible
If you can see fixed course times online in advance that remain the same every day, something is definitely wrong. The time and surf spot where your surf course will take place can be predicted just one day in advance. Factors such as wind, swell, size and tides have a big influence on this. So if a certain surf spot only runs at high tide, you can’t have the surf course at the same time every day. Surf coaches should keep a careful eye on the wave conditions and of course offer a flexible choice of spots. This way, you can develop as a surfer and also have variety.
